Kids Nutrition, Kids Fitness

To the Health Aware!

So what about kids?
How should they eat?
What exercise can they do and when?
They need more carbs than us right?
They can’t lift weights or it will stunt their growth right?
My kids will only eat macaroni and PB & J, and I have to feed them something, right?

I just finished our Saturday Kid’s Health and Fitness workshop and all I have to say is WOW!

Wow, are kids just amazing! Wow! Are they not the most intuitive creatures on the planet? Wow! Their fall back plan is always to simply have fun. AND Wow – Are parents confused by the health myths and superstitions regarding their kids health and fitness.

First of all, kids are just small people like you and I… Only smarter, more open, flexible, stronger, capable and energetic…. but besides that just little big people. Oh, and they get it. They get what health is, how to eat, that they need to move and exercise, that smoking is bad and high fructose corn syrup and other sugar products are poison and that it is important to take care of themselves AND their PARENTS!

Assuming there are no physical or medical reasons not to, I put kids to the same workouts we do in our adult classes and adjust for the weight using the appropriate % of their body weight. For example if I swing with a 53 lb kettle-bell that is roughly 27% of my body weight my son who is 8 swings with a 20 lb kettle-bell which comes in at 20% of his 80 pounds and so on. Then we just go at it. Remember I have been doing these high intensity metabolic workouts for some years now and am a bit more advanced in my technique but get beat by these kids EVERY time! They lift more, go faster, recover faster always asking me if they can do more while I rest or catch my breath, don’t count their reps and would keep going if I did not stop them laughing the whole time and excited to motivate their fellow kid-classmate and tease the old Doc leading the group…. That’s me by the way.

Kids can lift weights, they can exercise with adults, they can do advanced moves and workouts, they know innately what is healthy and what is not, they do not need more carbs, they do need less high fructose corn syrup and sugar products, do need to drink water, sleep well, relax and breathe, and will eat what you feed them…eventually. So, if all they eat is junk… that makes you the pusher parents! Eventually they will eat and love what you make them, whatever that is, and yes that includes veggies, and healthy foods. You have to take the time to shop, learn recipes, prepare and try some variations if they are used to the standard American diet, but they will come around and NO they will not starve!

Now, all that being said, it is a good idea to get some professional help. If your kids have specific issues, are on medications, are very overweight or you have any concern for them in making these type of changes be specific and find a practitioner or professional who has worked with such and line up your goals and go for it! If you have a doctor or any other health professional on your team who is not in line with your personal and family health goals…. fire them! They work for you and the world out there will offer enough resistance to your changes that you do not need that from your health care team. Be it getting off drugs and medications, adding nutrients, using body work, chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, meditation, exercise of any kind or changing your eating habits and lifestyle your team MUST be with you or your going to have problems you simply do not need.

Interview your health care professionals, ask them important questions, see how they would respond to different scenarios, how they work with other practitioners, if they have done what you are looking to do before and get on the same page! If they do not like the concept of interviewing… that would be an automatic fail in my book.

Anyway, kids are the best! Unfortunately the vast majority of overweight kids come from overweight or obese parents and the vast majority of overweight kids will become overweight adults and so the cycle continues and GROWS! It does not have to be this way unless you choose to allow it. Make being healthy and fit a family affair, your kids will be better off for it and can help keep you moving when you feel like stopping, have fun!

Dr. Don’s Thots: Jan 28

Here we go folks! This is a new year, approaching a new month, this is my new blog and each day we have a new chance to reshape our thoughts, actions and lives, so let’s get to it!

Proactive living is what gives you a proactive life. What does that mean? As we wonder along our paths we have some basic choices to make each and every moment when it comes to how we conduct our lives. The most basic in my opinion is the fundamental choice of participating in this experience we call life. Now, I understand that might sound funny, many people say, “Doc, we have no choice, this is my life, of course I am participating….right?” HOWEVER… breathing, drudging through the days barely moving or thinking and merely “going through the motions” as being a participant in one’s own life. The truth is, we are either playing in this game or we are watching it…hopefully at least on the bench and not the stands!

The FIRST STEP in being proactive and staring in this play of life is INTENTION. One must make the mental shift to intend to be a part of this, to be in the moment, step up and have a direction mission in life. Even the simple mission to be conscious of who you are and what you do, can blast you to the head of the class and get you in the game. Once you have the intention to do this you can start planning. Planning is the essential role and exercise in being aware. This is particularly true when it comes to your health. We are either actively improving our health or we are passively losing it. There is no middle ground, no coasting, no neutral. We will either spiral up in health and life or we will spiral down. The easiest way to spiral down the long path of mediocrity that leads to sickness and sadness is to simply do nothing, it will happen on its own.

In this blog, as time goes on, I will be writing and reflecting on real life approaches to making choices and creating habits and behaviors that will move you from the downward spiral and give you steps and ideas to plan, move, act, eat, relax, focus, get control, get healthy, and then get fit. All along, hopefully having fun, feeling empowered, feeling happy and inspiring those around you. Along the way I will share stories, experiences of what we do, teach and and I encourage you to share what you can to help us with our journey, efforts and vision for health and life.

Please be kind to yourself in your thoughts and be especially kind to that body of yours. Nurture it, feed it great clean fuel, work it out with efficient power building trainings, cool it with clean water, and have a plan to work on it from the inside out, YOU DESERVE IT!

Dr. Don’s Thots: Feb. 1st

Greetings Health Enthusiasts!

Today is a fantastic day! All the graces have lined up all the right elements for your absolute best day ever! There simply is no better time than NOW! Actually, there simply is no OTHER time than now. This is what we’ve got, right here, right now. The only difference from person to person is how they think and act in the now. So, get planning, make the effort, invest in yourself and pull the trigger on that back burner plan to take control of things and get on the path to a better life.

There never seems to be enough time, money, energy or whatever drives or holds you back in doing what you need to do to get planning to get healthy, feel better, sleep better, eat better, play harder, laugh more, be present and so on. The key to overcoming these apparent obstacles is to… JUST DO IT! Make the commitment to yourself, your family, your partner, whom ever it is in your world that you are accountable to, and jump in!

The only commodity that is equal for all of us is TIME. We all get 24 hours each day to do what we do and live our lives. We all obviously choose to do different things during our hours, but we all have the same amount of time. Priorities, whether we know it or not, agree or disagree, like it or not, drive our actions. Most people clearly express to me their priority of keeping a roof over their families head, putting food on the table, shuttling the kids around, taking care of their house, family and friends and a whole list of other activities that usually gets explained to me in detail after the words, “I totally need to do this. I know that not doing something is affecting my life, and I want to do this for ME, BUT….”

Most people are experts in making excuses and putting things off, especially health related efforts. This behavior simply needs to stop. It does not serve us, does not help us and profoundly makes things worse in the long run. We simply cannot judge our health by how we feel or if we can simply bear what is going on and get through our day.

So many people have lived with health issues, pain, or discomfort for so long that they have forgotten (at times even say they don’t ever remember) what it feels like to feel good. You know, to feel genuinely good, no pain, well rested, energized, strong, confident, focused, sharp, and ready for life! Many have forgotten that what I just described is our natural state of being, that living with anything less is not natural, normal or right. If we exist with anything less in our lives than that, something is wrong and essentially our bodies are sick.

The funny and fantastic thing is that when we take the steps and make the right efforts to restore our health we begin to return to this normal state of bliss and the body itself simply regulates itself and brings us back to our natural center…. no matter what our health issues are, when we do what needs to be done our body will heal, return to health and grow stronger in every way. So rather than trying to name every pain and woe and treat every symptom and discomfort we should be looking to reestablish our natural state of health and bliss.

Our programs, whether they are aimed at weight loss, pain management, medication reduction, anti-aging, or any other specific health issue, work to do just what needs to be done for all… return the body to it’s natural state of harmony and well-being.
